Apples!!

As the apple orchards finish picking, the farmer’s markets are full of sweet apple goodness – and there are so many to choose from!

I thought I’d do an apple tasting, so I picked up four from my local grocery store.

I decided to give them a try.  Then I heard my sister picked up some very unusual apples from a farmer’s market – Orange dream, strawberry apples – wow!  I need to try those too! Farmer’s markets are great places for finding those unusual fruits that are not typically mainstream.

So here are the results of my tasting:

Ambrosia – A softer apple, but not mealy.  Sweet, but not too sweet.  I think this would be a good one for cooking with – like with pork chops.

Granny Smith – we’ve all had this tart treat.  Crisp and sweet/sour.  This is the apple used in things like pies and applesauce – and just eaten raw.  A good traditional apple.

Honey Crisp (Still my favorite) – I like to cook with this one and just eat it as a snack.  It is exactly as it’s name implies, crisp and sweet.  Yes, they are more spendy, but I think they are worth the extra cost.

Pink Lady – this beauty was sweet and slightly crisp.  I’m a very picky apple person and it seemed a little mealy to me.  The apples that we always see at buffets, the red delicious, has that same soft, mealy texture.  The pink lady does have more flavor than a red delicious.

  8. Good of you to do the taste test. I do like Granny Smith, some can be a little tart but usually I can get good crisp, juicy ones for eating or cooking. Your recipes look delicious.

    How fun!
Pink lady is my usual favorite—but not if they’re mealy. I don’t think mine have been that way unless very old. Granny Smith—too sour for me, but great in a caramel apple or pie!

I enjoyed this post. I think I’ll feature it at the Sunday Sunshine Blog Hop 77!

    Congratulations
