Nevada – Shrimp Cocktail

image_pdfimage_print

In doing research for Nevada it was really hard to choose a dish to feature. There is such a diverse culture in this state and so many foods to choose from. There is a strong Basque influence in areas like Elko, and Paiute indians offered Native American cuisine in other parts. But, as we all know, the big draw to Nevada is Las Vegas.

Did you know Vegas was originally settled by Mormons in 1855? Yep – and they were largely responsible for building the first casinos. But a lot has changed since then! Vegas is a mecca of entertainment and food. So many kinds of food! All those amazing buffets of various themes, the one that stands out is the Golden Gate Casino. Purchased by an Italian American from San Francisco in 1955, he introduced the shrimp cocktail in 1959 and it was a huge hit. This delicious appetizer sold for fifty cents until 1991! And its still only $2.99 and served in an ice cream soda glass! As you can guess, they’ve sold a lot! Although this dish was created in Boston, Las Vegas claims the most sold. You can get one in just about every restaurant in Nevada!

So if you want to enjoy a taste a Las Vegas, here’s a super easy recipe to put together quickly! Play a slot game on your phone and you can pretend you’re in “Sin City”!

Here’s How to Do it:

Start by cooking the shrimp. I purchased froze, raw, peeled and deveined shrimp. Boil a couple of quarts of water and add crab and shrimp boil. This comes in a bag or in liquid form. One bag is good for the whole pot. When the water is at full boil, drop in the shrimp and turn off the heat.

Allow the shrimp to sit in the hot water for about 10 to 15 minutes or until it turns a light pink. Drain and chill.

Once the shrimp is cold, mix the remaining ingredients together in a bowl.

Toss the shrimp into the sauce and serve in a glass dish with a lemon or lime wedge. Tradition uses a lemon, but I like the slight sweetness of a lime!
