Two Delectable Dips for National Chip & Dip Day

It’s National Chip and Dip day – a day to celebrate the All American chip dip!

Although dips have been around for centuries (like hummus), chips and dips became popular in the US during the great depression.  They were an inexpensive and easy to prepare party finger food.

Using salsa and dips made with sour cream became the go to party food in the 1940s and 50s.

Here are two super easy dips to prepare and celebrate the day with!

Bacon & Onion Chip Dip and Hot Chili Cheese Dip

Bacon & Onion Chip Dip

What you need:

  • 1 cup of sour cream
  • 2 Tablespoons mayonnaise
  • 4-5 slices of cooked bacon, chopped (save about ½ Tablespoon for garnish)
  • 3 green onions, minced (save about ½ Tablespoon of the green top for garnish)
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder
  • ½ to ¾ teaspoon smoked salt

How to Do it:

Put everything (except the garnish) into a food processor.

Process until it is all chopped and blended.  Refrigerate for 2-3 hours or overnight.

Place in a serving dish and top with a little cheddar for garnish and serve.

Hot Chili Cheese Dip

What you need:

  • 1 can of chili with beans (use your favorite brand)
  • 1 cup grated sharp or extra sharp cheddar
  • 2 heaping tablespoons of chili powder
  • 1 ½ teaspoons lemon pepper
  • ¼ cup canned red salsa (not the chunky stuff, the puree salsa roja)
  • If you like it hot – ¼ teaspoon cayenne pepper

How to Do it:

Put everything (except a little cheese to save for garnish) into a food processor.

Process until it is all chopped and blended.

Put into a microwavable bowl and heat until it is hot all the way through and the cheese is good and melted.

Top with a little cheddar for garnish and serve.
