Homemade Corn Dogs

The State and County Fair season is winding down here where I live. As I looked at everyone’s pictures from their visits, I noticed one common theme – food. And what food was shown the most? Well corn dogs, of course!!

I love corn dogs. I like making a batch and keeping them in the freezer for lunches or snacks. And they are so easy to make!

What you need to make corn dogs –

First, there are a few things you’ll need to make these treats.

Besides the ingredients, you’ll need a deep fryer or deep kettle with a thermometer to deep fry.

You’ll also need a tall glass or narrow container to hold the batter. I used the container that came with me immersion blender. It was exactly the right size.

Wooden sticks are used to hold the dogs. Popsicle sticks work great. The first ones I used were thin and not very stable. The popsicle sticks were perfect!

Making the dogs –

Start by mixing up the batter.

First mix the dry ingredients. Place them in a medium bowl and use a small whisk to make sure it’s well blended.

Next, in an another bowl whisk all the wet ingredients together.

Now slowly pour the wet into the dry and whisk until well blended.

Pour the batter into a tall, narrow container. Let it sit about five minutes – or while you heat the oil.

Put enough oil into a kettle or deep fryer to cover the dogs when they are put in. If you are using a kettle, be sure to clip a thermometer to the side to monitor the heat. You want it to be steady at 350 degrees.

Put the stick inside the hot dogs to at least half way up. I used extra long hot dogs, so I cut them in half.

Dip the dogs into the batter and twirl it while you lift them to make sure the entire hot dog is covered.

Next, carefully place it into the hot oil. Dip two to three more and put into the fryer. Do not over crowd! It will lower the temperature and make for oil corn dogs.

Cook for 3 to 4 minutes, or until they are golden brown on all sides.

Remove from the oil and place on paper towels to drain. Repeat the process until all the dogs are fried.

Eat them now, or store them.

Freeze them and store in zip lock freezer bags for several months. Reheat them in the microwave. If you want them crispier, heat them in the oven or air fryers. Serve with your favorite condiments (I must have mustard!) –

Yummy is the word for this. I made a couple substitutions. For the hotdogs I used vegan ones and for the egg I used Just Egg. Never made corndogs before and they were so good.
